 Hard-Fought Deal in COP 17

COP 17 reached a hard-fought agreement Sunday on a complex and far-reaching program meant to set a new course for the global fight against climate change for the coming decades.  194 Parties agreed a pact on Sunday that for the first time would force all the biggest polluters to take action to slow the pace of global changing.

 First conference on Climate Change and Development in Africa (CCDA-1)

Hosted by the African Climate Policy Centre (ACPC), the secretariat for the ClimDev-Africa Programme, the first conference on Climate Change and development in Africa (CCDA-1) was held between 17 and 19 October 2011 at the United Nations Conference Centre in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Mandated by African Heads of State and Government, as well as by Africa's Ministers of Finance, Planning and Environment , the ClimDev-Africa Programme is a joint initiative of the African Union Commission (AUC), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the African Development Bank(AfDB). The program responds to the urgent challenge that climate change poses to the advancement of Africa's development objectives.

Go Green Exhibition

The ‘Go Green Afrique – Africa Fair’ was initiated by Initiative Africa and implemented in cooperation with African Renewable Energy Alliance (AREA), Cordaid, the Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce, the Heinrich Boell Stiftung (HBS), the Horn of Africa Regional Environment Centre and Network (HoA-REC/N), the Pan African Youth Union (PAYU), Population Health and Environment (PHE) Ethiopia Consortium and the World Future Council (WFC) to promote sustainable living and production as well as environmentally friendly alternatives.

Infrastructure and Climate Change workshop declaration

The infrastructure and Climate change workshop held on December 31, 2010 brought together 70 participants from various levels of stakeholders, namely, government, academia, civil society and development partners. The workshop produced a nine-point declaration presented hereunder:

Recognizing that dangerous climate change particularly flooding and drought are happening in the country repeatedly and studies show that these will continue to increase in intensity and frequency in the future;

Today it is raining and hot at the same time. Cancun is a very beautiful resort city with all its beaches and good looking hotels. The Mexican government is well prepared to host as many participants as possible.

The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Cancun, Mexico, started on Monday with calls for commitment and compromise from Parties/Countries. The two-weeks meeting is the sixteenth Conference of the 194 Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the sixth meeting of the 192 Parties to the Kyoto Protocol.

All Conference of Parties have peculiar features in terms of bringing forth contentious phrases and concepts. Normally it takes quite some time before one discovers such ambiguous terminologies in the negotiating text. Some such phrases that have come out very loudly in Cancun were vulnerability, [fund] trustee, new and additional money, etc. This article will focus on one term, vulnerability owing to the fact that the definition and interpretation of the term have enormous implications for Ethiopia.
